One year ago today my Brother Jim and I landed in Syria. We spent two weeks driving around the country on our own. The "Arab Spring" had already taken hold in Syria and many had been killed. We had no problem while we were there, but things were starting to get kind of crazy just before we left.
This is a photograph of an oil painting I purchased from a local artist in the "Old City" of Damascus. The Umayyad Mosque, the fourth holiest site in Islam, is prominently featured. We visited this Mosque in the Old City.
Over 10,000 citizens have died in fighting in Syria since we left.
